Historical Info (Click Here)

Founded by The Kingsman’s bassist, Norm Sundholm, Sunn® attempted to give bassists a better bass amp and cabinet experience by fusing Dynaco® ultra linear power amp sections with Fender® preamp topography as their starting basis, as well as using sealed cab folded horn technology with upgraded speakers. For years in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, Sunn® gear was the choice of many pros, but then they fell out of favor by the early 1980’s, were later bought by Fender® in 1985, and then eventually shuttered in 2002. Sunn® enjoyed a resurgence by stoner rock and doom metal bands in the 1990’s but that was not enough to save the brand.

The Solarus™ cab was produced from 1969 into the early 1970s, but only in 1969 and 1970 did the open back cab have no serial number plate in the back. Coupled with the fact that this particular cabinet does not have either the smiling sun logo of the early production of gear from 1965 through 1967, or the serial number plates of the later production run, this cab would seem to be an early example of a Solarus™ cab according to a few sources I referenced.

The cab in this vintage was usually voiced with Sunn®  Guitar Transducer™ speakers or with JBL® D123F™ speakers as an upgrade. How this cab came to have two speakers from radically different eras (1970’s Pyle® Pyle Driver™ and 1990’s Jensen® Blue Label Special Design JCH 12/70™ 8 ohm 70w 12 inch speakers) is something where we will never know the truth, as the owner I talked to purchased this cab with these after market speakers already installed. The cab with these speakers still has that solid Sunn® bottom with a slightly more mid forward and brighter character, which helps it cut in the mix with minimal additive EQ.
