Historical Info (Click Here)

Hiwatt® was started as a boutique amp builder by Dan Reeves in his garage in 1966 when he wanted to do things in a slightly different way compared to his previous employer, Sound City®. The amps and cabs were relatively expensive compared to their peers in the UK Guitar and bass amp scene, many of the early amps were customized for artists in unique ways. Throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, Hiwatt® became serious competition for space on stages across the world by major touring acts up until Dan Reeves’s untimely demise in 1981. The name passed between two concerns in the 1980s and 1990s, befoer being centerd in ownership under one coroproate concern.

His cabinets were not only legendary for their use of tongue and groove joints, 9 point bracing, Fane® speakers, but also for their use of 14 ply Baltic birch plywood and the toughest vinyl he could find, that would be copied by boutique guitar cab makers for years to come. This made the Hiwatt® cabs known as being tank-like in their road worthiness

How does the cab sound? The cab is tighter in the low end and brighter than any Marshall® or Mesa® I have encountered. I cannot imagine how much volume would need to pass through those speakers before they distort or blow, as they get quite loud singing tones, as loud as a human being can stand being in front of them. They are not a cab you can easily say, you can substitute this other brand to get their sound.

The well loved cabinet was purchased from a musician who did numerous gigs in Brooklyn and the Jersey shore with the cab (most of the stories the seller told me of where he bought the cab and its history before his ownership were unfortunately debunked in my research by cross referencing them with others on the local scene during the era- much thanks to the band Silvertomb and various TGP members for their help debunking things).
