Historical Info (Click Here)

When new, these classic amps were hand selected and demoed by Rufus Reid (in the mid 1990’s and early 2000’s) to replace the William Paterson University of NJ Jazz Studies program’s old Polytone® 102™ amps that were used for both bass and guitar. The guitar and bass students heavily use these amp cabinets day in and day out during the semester for practice, classes, juries, performances, and recordings. Many thanks to the program for their generosity and trust in allowing me, a Recording Arts alumni, to capture these amps in all their broken in magnificence.

The small closed back rear ported cabinet is relatively portable, deadened with what looks to be polyfill insulation, but the combo sounds pretty stark and revealing- tone balanced at lower volumes and with a bit of a bite at louder volumes, like a slightly brighter version of a Polytone® amp. The speaker design is way over-engineered for strictly guitar use, as it doesn’t bottom out or fart like most guitar speakers when you try to play bass guitar through them at gig volume. But the SWR®  also doesn’t sound like a blanket is over the speaker when playing guitar through it, unlike some prominent bass speakers sound when playing guitar through them.

Impulse responses made with these cabs can really sound great with many different types of digital amp models using clean or light gain, even bass amp models. The cabinets are capable of focused, compelling recorded guitar or bass tones that range from Gospel or P+W, cleaner modern/retro-rock, to fusion or jazz, or even traditional country. The cabinet loves clean tones as well as mild edge of break-up distortion.

The tweeters in each set of cab captures were isolated from the woofer electrically to allow the user to select cab mixes either with or without a tweeter. If you purchase the Combo pack or Wave file pack, you will also be able to create your own cab mixes with the proper impulse response (IR) speaker file mixing software (IR mixing software NOT included in this pack of course!), so that you may control the amount of tweeter or swap different era tweeters, which have subtly different sounds to them.
